What's the difference between a listing and a unit?

Have you wondered why CiiRUS might call your rental home either a "unit" or a "listing" depending on the situation? The answer is quite simple, and it's done to help maximize your efficiency!

What's a unit?

The unit is the actual physical rental property. You can touch it, visit it, and most importantly you manage it!

Any task that involves physical or logistical interaction with the rental property (such as housekeeping, maintenance, inspection, and accounting for example) happen at the unit level.

What's a listing?

The listing is the online representation of that unit. The listing is what the guest views online to book. It's not tangible, and you can't touch it. It's the web-based representation of the rental property that guests view and book online; the product of your marketing efforts!

So, any task that involves distribution, marketing, optimization, and virtual communication is typically happening on the listing level.

Why does the difference matter?

Here's an easy example. Let's say you have a home in your CiiRUS account, with ID number 12345. The unit is labeled "Paradise Rental Home" when you manage it in CiiRUS, but when the guests sees it on Airbnb or Vrbo it's labeled "Luxurious couples hideaway, minutes from the beach". It's one entry in CiiRUS, but there is a clear distinction between the unit and the listing.

The distinction makes it easier to compartmentalize actions you take in the system and how they affect the rental home. In this case, you have an internal title for the unit, and an external title for the listing as it appears on the channels.

In the end...

Don't overthink it! The naming convention doesn't make a huge difference to your daily work, but it does help our super users better delegate system functions, and it makes life a lot easier for newer users coming to grips with the industry and best practices.
